Josef Matthias Hauer (1883-1959) - австрийский композитор и теоретик. Учился играть на цитре, виолончели, органе и петь хором. Выдержав несколько государственных экзаменов, работал учителем музыки.
В 1918 г. издал 1-й трактат, с 1919 г. обдумывал метод музыкальной композиции, используя 12-тоновую систему. Плодотворно этим занимался до 1938 г., когда его музыка была причислена нацистами к "дегенеративному искусству". Тогда проявил осторожность, ничего не издавая; зато после войны отвёл душу.
Додекафонию осваивал независимо от Шёнберга, на основе "учения тропов" - 44 шестизвучных группировках, составляющих гармонический "фундамент". Выбор именно 44 не комментировал, поэтому современные музыковеды, знающие увлечение композитора историей Китая, увидели 44 китайских провинции.
Начиная с произведения "Nomos", кот. считается первой 12-тоновой композицией, использовал тропы и думал оформить систему "универсального музыкального языка", позже выдвигал "звукоцветовую концепцию мелоса".
Заслуги Хауэра оценивались высоко. Он получл музыкальную премию Вены (1954) и большую государственную премию Австрии (1955).
